The Salvador Carnival has entered the Guinness Book as the world’s largest trio elétrico (sound truck) carnival, and here I will tell you more about this gigantic party and my perception of what it is like to experience and feel this energy up close!
The Guinness Book Recognition
On March 4th of 2025, the Salvador Carnival was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest trio elétrico (sound truck) carnival in the world. This certification reaffirms the grandeur of the event, which gathers millions of people, hundreds of sound trucks, and over 5 days of nonstop music and celebration. The massive structure of the event, the participation of major artists, and the contagious energy of the streets of Salvador were key factors in achieving this title.
This recognition places Salvador’s Carnival on an even higher level in the international scene, attracting the attention of tourists from all over the world and solidifying the city as one of the top destinations for partying and culture. What is also very important for the local economy.

The History of Carnival in Salvador
Salvador’s Carnival has a rich history filled with tradition. From the first street groups to the explosion of trio elétricos (sound trucks), this festival has evolved into one of the greatest spectacles on the planet.
The streets are taken over by the local people and also attract tourists from Brazil and all over the world. But the ones who made history, who make everything happen, and who fill the streets every year are, without a doubt, the locals.
If you’ve ever been to Bahia State, you’ve heard of Axé Music. This is the musical style that dominates the entire state, especially the capital. If you’re not Brazilian and have never been to Bahia, you need to go! You have to see for yourself how the city is completely taken over by the energy of Axé’s rhythms and how deeply it is rooted in the local culture and history.
40 Years of Axé Music: A Revolution in Bahian Music
In 2025, Axé Music celebrates 40 years of history. This musical genre, born in the heart of Salvador’s Carnival, revolutionized Brazilian music and became one of Bahia’s most significant cultural symbols. It all started in the 1980s when artists such as Luiz Caldas, Sarajane, Banda Reflexus, and Chiclete com Banana blended rhythms like frevo, reggae, samba-reggae, and ijexá, creating a vibrant and unique sound.
Over the years, artists such as Ivete Sangalo, Daniela Mercury, Bell Marques, Claudia Leitte, and other big names of Brazilian culture helped consolidate Axé as a movement that transcended carnival and won over all of the country. Today, despite new musical influences, Axé remains alive as the official soundtrack of Salvador’s festivities.

75 Years of Dodô and Osmar: The Fathers of Trio Elétricos
The year 2025 also marks the 75th anniversary of the invention of the trio elétricos (sound trucks) by Dodô and Osmar. In 1950, these two visionary musicians paraded through the streets of Salvador with a modified 1929 Ford, playing electrified music and giving birth to the concept of “trio elétrico”. What started as a fun experiment among friends turned into the greatest street spectacle in the world.
Since then, the trio elétrico has evolved, gained more power, and become a moving stage for major artists. Today, it is the heart of Salvador’s Carnival, drawing massive crowds along the Barra-Ondina and Campo Grande circuits. Without Dodô and Osmar, Bahia’s Carnival would not have the grandeur it has today.

Experiencing Salvador’s Carnival Up Close
Being in the middle of this festival is a unique and indescribable experience. The sound of the trio elétricos, the energy of the crowd, and the palpable joy make Salvador’s Carnival an unforgettable celebration. It’s incredible to see people leaving their worries behind and fully embracing the happiness of the moment. Whether following a block (group of people that pays to follow the truck), enjoying a VIP camarote, or simply jumping behind the truck as a “pipoca” (also the group of people following the truck, but for free), the feeling is the same: pure bliss.
The recognition by the Guinness Book only reinforces what Baianos (people from Bahia State) have known for a long time: Salvador’s Carnival is the greatest open-air spectacle on the planet. And for those who get to experience this celebration, it’s a memory that lasts forever in the heart and mind.
Challenges of Salvador’s Carnival
Despite all the excitement and beauty of Carnival, it also comes with its challenges. It’s important to be prepared for situations like heavier-than-usual traffic, large crowds (after all, we’re talking about the biggest street party in the world!), public restrooms, and the difficulty of moving between the sound trucks. However, with the right tips and a deeper understanding of the event, it’s possible to plan ahead and minimize these challenges.
