Lençóis Maranhenses, covering 156.5 thousand hectares in northeastern Brazil, is a natural phenomenon of breathtaking beauty. The vast desert-like expanse, with dunes reaching up to 50 meters high, resembles sheets spread on a bed – hence the name Lençóis, meaning sheets in Portuguese.
What makes this place truly enchanting is the intense and crystalline blue lagoons nestled between the dunes, forming a landscape that is almost too surreal to believe. Our journey begins in Barreirinhas, where we board a speedboat to navigate the Preguiças River. The slow meandering of the river, aptly named «preguiça» meaning lazy in Portuguese, allows us to observe the unique fauna of the region. The journey unfolds with ever-changing vegetation, showcasing diverse species from the Amazon, the Cerrado, and other biomes.
Vassouras and Atins
A stop in Vassouras offers encounters with prego monkeys and a chance to explore the dunes and swim in a pristine lagoon. The journey continues to Atins, a secluded village nestled within the Lençóis Maranhenses dunes. Accessible only by boat or 4WD vehicle over the dunes, Atins provides a tranquil retreat in the heart of the natural marvel.

A pit stop at one of our selected restaurants situated between the dunes and the ocean treats us to delicious grilled shrimp and many other gastronomic pleasures. Recharging with a delightful lunch and a siesta in hammocks, we continue our adventure by 4WD vehicle back to Barreirinhas, traversing the dunes and relishing the incredible scenery.
